About Bittersweet Basketry

In 1997, after moving back to New York from Maine, I established Bittersweet Basketry in Dansville.

I have been a basketry artist for over 30 years and have co- authored 2 instructional pattern booklets and have designed over 90 individual basket patterns. I weave all my baskets myself using a wide variety of natural and commercially available materials.

               About Bittersweet Basketry

Weaving styles include simple country to eclectic art pieces. With the exception of Nantucket Baskets all shaping is done by hand without the use of molds. Materials are dyed by hand and most are stained when finished.

I offer finished baskets for sale here on line, from my home studio, At Dansville Artworks In Dansville NY, presently at Gatherings at the Depot in Leicester NY and at The Art Loft (seasonally) in Mayville and Bemus Point New York and at various craft shows and holiday sales venues.

Custom basket designs are encouraged and welcome.

Teaching includes classes in my basement studio at

251 Main Street in Dansville NY,

in basket shops, at national conventions,

in schools, & for private groups.

I welcome the opportunity to earn your trust &

deliver the best service in the industry.

Artist Statement

I chose the Art of Nursing for a profession, but my life as a crafter is somewhat genetic. Grandparents on both sides were master Tailors, intuitive seamstresses and needle workers. My Mom taught me machine sewing and hand needlework at a young age, my Dad was a tinkerer extraordinaire, he could make or fix just about anything. There were no limits to imagination.

I eventually became a fabricaholic, a yarn hoarded and I have all the DMC floss colors!. I was fortunate enough to move to a neighborhood in Maine full of very talented crafty women. I still sew, knit and cross stitch but my passion, or obsession if you will, is the art of Basketry

There are two questions I get asked repeatedly.

What our customers are saying

Why do I consider myself an artist since I just make baskets?

As a basketry artist, the idea or concept visualized or sketched

becomes a three dimensional, functional piece through the manipulation (weaving) of materials. It is the classic creative process of the artist. To be able to form an idea and create a picture in my mind and then go about producing it with the materials I use gives me tremendous satisfaction.

I enjoy the challenge of designing a basket for a custom order.

I try to incorporate the customers’ needs and desires into my idea of what will be the perfect basket. Some of my most popular original designs have stemmed from such orders.

I teach because I love to share this time honored craft.

Throughout history, the people of the world have made baskets.

They adapted their weaving for need, function, and available materials. Traditions and techniques were passed through generations, yet over time much was lost and interest waned.

I feel privileged to be able to keep this ancient craft alive.

First time students often doubt that they can make a basket or that their effort will resemble the sample basket. One of my class rules is that no one leaves without a finished basket. The excitement and gratitude they express when they complete their projects are like gifts from the past.

My baskets are the vessels through which I connect with the past, with mother earth, and with the future.

I hope you enjoy my work!
